Magnetic particle testing

is a non-destructive material testing process for castings and workpieces made of ferromagnetic materials. The physical effect of breaking magnetic field lines at the interfaces between media with different permeability is utilised.

A magnetic field is built up on the parts being tested. Defects in or close to the surface produce stray fields in the magnetic field. With the application of iron powder or spraying with test liquids containing iron particles, the defect is clearly revealed by the particles.
